When discussing the adoption of electric vehicles, statistics often include plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). While this approach provides a broader picture of the electrified mobility market, it does not always reflect how widespread fully battery-powered vehicles actually are.

To provide a more accurate snapshot of the market, a new analysis by Felipe Munoz, automotive industry analyst and content creator at Car Industry Analysis, focuses exclusively on BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles). The study highlights the countries where fully electric cars are gaining an increasingly significant share of the market.

In the first quarter of the year, Norway once again ranked firmly at the top of the global standings. In the Scandinavian country, BEVs accounted for approximately 98% of all new vehicle registrations, further strengthening Norway’s leadership in the transition toward zero-emission mobility. It is followed by other markets with a strong presence of electric vehicles, including Hong Kong, which continues to report its statistics separately from mainland China.

The analysis, which covers 66 international markets, also highlights the growth of several Asian countries. Singapore is experiencing rapid acceleration, driven largely by the expansion of Chinese automakers, while Vietnam is benefiting from the increasingly important role of VinFast, the national brand that is spearheading the adoption of electric vehicles in the domestic market.

Among the surprises in the ranking is Uruguay, which has achieved a higher BEV market share than some countries traditionally associated with electric mobility. Globally, fully electric vehicles accounted for 14.3% of all new vehicle registrations, placing the worldwide average between Turkey – where growth has also been supported by the expansion of domestic automaker Togg – and Colombia, where Tesla’s arrival has helped boost sales of battery-electric vehicles.
