Hologistics, the European project aiming to revolutionize logistics and freight transport by making them greener, smarter, and more connected, has officially launched. Coordinated by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (italy), the project is funded by the European Union and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, with the goal of reducing emissions in the sector by 2028.

It develops solutions ranging from electric vehicles and “smart” containers to advanced digital services based on artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. In addition to reducing environmental impact, the project aims to improve the efficiency, resilience, and connectivity of European logistics networks.

Among the program’s pillars are 12 innovative solutions, including digital platforms to optimize freight flows, resource-sharing systems, and collaborative governance models. These will be tested in three large pilot projects and simulated across complex networks, covering different sectors from the port industry to urban logistics.

The consortium involves 25 partners from 14 countries, combining academic and industrial expertise, including the Polytechnic University of Milan.

The project is fully aligned with the EU’s climate agenda, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. Demonstration pilots will seek to reduce road transport distances, increase medium- and long-range rail freight, and promote zero-emission solutions for last-mile delivery, from urban cargo bikes to automated vessels for inland waterways.

Hologistics is already operational, with several Work Packages active: WP3, led by CargoBeamer, focuses on zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure and their multimodal integration, while WP4 develops the project’s digital backbone, enabling interoperability and optimization of logistics flows through artificial intelligence and IoT platforms.

With a holistic approach that combines technological innovation and sustainable operational practices, Hologistics aims to demonstrate that European logistics can become greener without sacrificing efficiency and competitiveness.
