Strategic Chile–Europe alliance on lithium
13 February 2026Today we celebrate International Battery Day, a day dedicated to an invention that has transformed the way we live, work and move: the battery.
The story begins in 1800, when Alessandro Volta invented the first electric pile, paving the way for the age of electricity. Since then, every technological advancement has accompanied major industrial revolutions—from the first industrial applications to the complex, connected systems of today.
Throughout the 20th century, batteries played a key role in the spread of portable devices, pioneering electric vehicles, and industrial energy production. Today, with the advent of lithium batteries and advanced energy management technologies, their impact is even more evident: they make mass electric mobility possible, power high-performance electric vehicles, and support increasingly sustainable industrial systems.
Electric cars, in particular, have become a symbol of the energy revolution. From early experiments in the laboratories of electric pioneers, we have progressed to modern models offering autonomy, power, and connectivity unimaginable just a few decades ago. The battery is no longer just an energy tank but a strategic component that determines the performance, efficiency, and sustainability of vehicles and industrial machines.
On the occasion of International Battery Day, it is worth reflecting on how this small yet powerful device has changed our lives—from Volta’s original insight to the latest advancements driving the transition toward an electric, connected, and sustainable industry. The battery is much more than a component: it is the energy heart of machines and vehicles.
Innovative technologies for the production and recycling of electric and hybrid vehicles, for the automotive, transport, and industrial sectors, will be presented at E-Tech Europe, taking place from October 7 to 9, 2026, at BolognaFiere as part of Urban Tech 2026 – The Urban Technology Show, the new event dedicated to e-mobility, traffic, commuting, security, telecom & data, and the environment.
