Global milestone: 39 countries surpass 10% EV sales
13 April 20262025 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for global electric mobility. This is highlighted by the new 2025 Battery Report from the Volta Foundation, which dedicates extensive coverage to the growth of electric vehicles (EVs), increasingly central to the automotive sector’s energy transition.
According to the report, now available for digital download, global EV sales rose by 22%, reaching 21.6 million units. This outcome consolidates the market’s expansion trend and underscores that electrification is no longer a future prospect but an established reality.
The most significant figure comes from China, which, for the first time, surpasses the symbolic majority threshold: EVs now account for 51% of new vehicle registrations. This historic milestone marks a turning point for the entire global automotive sector.
The growth of electrified vehicles is part of a broader evolution of the battery ecosystem, a key element in supporting the widespread adoption of electric mobility. The report highlights significant developments across the entire value chain, from investment and production to technological innovation.
In particular, the expansion of energy storage systems (BESS), with a 79% annual growth rate and over 100 GW of new installed capacity, strengthens the energy infrastructure needed to support rising EV demand.
On the technological front, the sector continues to evolve rapidly to meet the needs of electric mobility: from sodium-ion batteries, which are approaching commercialization, to next-generation silicon anodes.
Produced with the contribution of over 120 international experts, the report confirms that the growth of electrified vehicles is now the main driver transforming the entire battery industry. This acceleration is set to continue in the coming years, profoundly reshaping the future of mobility.
