12 February 2026A new white paper from the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) provides companies in the battery sector with a practical roadmap to prepare for the implementation of EU Regulation 2023/1542 on batteries and battery waste. The document analyzes the role of the Battery Passport, the Alliance’s flagship program, as a tool to meet European requirements on supply chain traceability, due diligence, and carbon footprint reporting.
The Battery Passport is an efficient and robust digital tool designed to help economic operators comply with obligations under the new EU regulatory framework. In particular, it enables structured supply chain mapping, supports risk-based due diligence processes, and facilitates the declaration of product carbon footprints.
A central chapter of the white paper focuses on the Battery Passport’s data assurance system, intended to streamline the future verification of information by notified bodies and other decision-makers. By cross-recognizing existing due diligence schemes, the GBA aims to make the Battery Passport a potentially officially recognized scheme for compliance with EU Regulation requirements.
The white paper also highlights how the Battery Passport can help reduce regulatory uncertainty. The benchmarks for responsible sourcing and production are based on the EU Regulation and further enriched by input from a diverse range of international stakeholders. This shared, consensus-driven approach, according to the GBA, ensures long-term reliability and credibility, even in an evolving regulatory context.
Beyond compliance, the document outlines operational benefits for companies: improved visibility and resilience of supply chains, more effective risk management, reduced duplication of information, and greater efficiency in reporting processes through digital interoperability.
The white paper is also addressed to regulators, consumers, and affected communities, who can use the data generated by the Battery Passport as tools for transparency, accountability, and dialogue. The GBA encourages companies to trial the Battery Passport starting in 2026, presenting it as an opportunity to turn regulatory obligations into competitive and market advantages.
