University of Bologna and CNH sign agreement on research, innovation and sustainability
12 February 2026A new cooperation axis between Chile and Europe is taking shape in the lithium sector. INLiSa, the Chilean institute dedicated to knowledge, technology, and governance of lithium and salars (large natural salt flats), and the European Lithium Institute (eLi) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic alliance aimed at promoting the sustainable development of the lithium value chain.
The agreement responds to the growing need for structured international cooperation to ensure a sustainable lithium supply, particularly from salar brines—a key resource for the energy transition and the battery industry.
The MoU establishes a reciprocal collaborative relationship to support joint programs and projects in research, development, and innovation, as well as training and technology transfer on lithium- and salar-related topics.
Among the pillars of the collaboration is the creation of a true Chile–Europe strategic alliance, designed to link the scientific, technological, and industrial capabilities of both regions and foster high-value projects. The agreement also foresees spaces for exchange and visibility, including workshops, technical missions, and meetings between companies and research centers, with the aim of generating concrete opportunities for cooperation and technological deployment.
Another key element is the joint mobilization of funding, through the coordination of co-financed proposals for national and international programs. The MoU also provides a clear and predictable framework for intellectual property, confidentiality, and public communication, reducing barriers to industry participation.
For members of the European Lithium Institute and actors in research and innovation, the agreement opens new opportunities to connect European projects and infrastructures with Chilean needs, resources, and policies related to salar brines. In particular, the partnership will enable engagement in INLiSa initiatives, including the design of pilot and demonstration platforms for lithium and salar technologies.
