Electric cars: prices are starting to fall in Europe
20 May 2026A €6 billion investment is set to strengthen Europe’s digital map and place Italy at the center of the global race for artificial intelligence infrastructure. This is the core of the plan presented by EdgeConneX, a global data center provider with more than 80 facilities operating across over 60 markets and 20 countries, to the Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso during a meeting at Palazzo Piacentini.
The project foresees the construction of three new data centers between the province of Lodi and the southern area of Milano, with infrastructure designed to enhance the country’s computing capacity in one of the most strategic areas of the digital transition.
Among the planned sites, the Lodi facility will play a leading role: according to the presentation, it will be one of the largest data centers in Europe and will be specifically focused on processing artificial intelligence applications, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
During the discussions, Urso stressed that Italy is strengthening its position as a European hub for advanced digital infrastructure, particularly in AI-related technologies. This trajectory is also supported by policies aimed at attracting foreign investment in the sector.
The Ministry highlighted its national strategy for data centers, which has already attracted more than €7 billion in investments between 2023 and 2025, with an additional €25 billion announced for the 2026–2028 period.
Against this backdrop, the EdgeConneX project stands out as one of the most significant initiatives for the growth of Italy’s digital capacity, in a global environment where competition is increasingly defined by computing power and access to dedicated artificial intelligence infrastructure.
