Stellantis has announced the launch of its new strategic “E-Car” project, an initiative focused on developing a new generation of small, affordable electric vehicles designed specifically for European urban mobility. The first models are expected to enter production in 2028 at the Pomigliano d’Arco plant in Italy.

The name E-Car encapsulates the project’s philosophy: “European, Emotion, Electric, Environmental friendliness” This is a high-potential segment designed to be produced in Europe for European citizens, with the aim of supporting the spread of zero-emission vehicles in cities and revitalizing a segment—small affordable cars—that has sharply declined in recent years.

According to Stellantis, the project also aligns with the priorities of the European Commission, which has recognized the strategic role of this type of vehicle in supporting employment in automotive design and manufacturing, as well as accelerating the transition toward everyday electric mobility.

Affordability and environmental sustainability

The new E-Car models will be compact, innovative, and fully electric vehicles developed in line with Europe’s tradition of “popular mobility,” with a strong focus on design, affordability, and environmental sustainability. The stated goal is to provide solutions tailored to everyday urban commuting, responding to growing demand for simpler and more efficient vehicles.

Antonio Filosa, Ceo of Stellantis, emphasized that the project represents a return to the group’s industrial roots in Europe. Customer demand, he explained, is increasingly focused on small, stylish, locally produced, and affordable cars. The company is responding to this demand with a new range of models across several of its brands.

The choice of the Pomigliano d’Arco plant is not incidental. This historic Italian manufacturing site has already produced some of the most iconic and widely used models in the European market, including the famous Fiat Panda, a symbol of practical and affordable city cars.

Stellantis is also betting on an advanced technological approach: the new E-Car models will be based on next-generation BEV platforms developed in collaboration with selected partners, with the aim of reducing costs and accelerating time-to-market, making the vehicles more accessible without compromising quality or performance.

With this project, the group strengthens its strategy in the compact electric vehicle segment, considered crucial for the wider adoption of zero-emission mobility in European urban areas.
